Find a College Where You Can Be Yourself | Candace Hutson

Students often focus solely on what college to choose, overlooking the importance of building a meaningful college career. This narrow focus can lead to missing out on valuable experiences, networking opportunities, and personal growth that could shape their future. Candace Hutson proposes asking students four deep reflective questions to help them explore their identity, passions, and purpose as a way to design their college career before choosing a college.

Once the presentation ends, click here to access a form that walks you through Candace’s four questions.

  • Be Encouraged, LLC., a business created, owned, and operated by Candace Hutson, strives to provide college and college - bound students (of any age) with the knowledge and resources for successful college careers. It acknowledges that the college experience is not the same for every individual and, as a result, does not try to force any student on one set path. Instead, Be Encouraged, LLC. promotes self-growth and encourages individuals to be themselves; it works with them to create the maps for their academic journeys. It also provides academic coaching to assist students with time management, building better study habits, organizational skills and self-advocacy. It is important that students know their identity inside and outside of the classroom.

Inspired by her late sister Shonda, who helped a family friend prepare for her prom, Candace decided to volunteer at a 2010 Prom dress giveaway and began the Queens chapter of Operation PROM in 2011 in New York City. Now known as Operation PROM National Network (OPNN), a nationally recognized 501 c 3 not for profit organization, was originally established to help low-income students attend their proms by providing free prom dresses and tuxedo rentals.
Candace Hutson is a board member of the Operation Prom National Network and one of the directors of Shonda's Prom Closet. The organization has dressed more than 1,500 students for prom and has become a staple in the Queens, NY community celebrating 13 years in 2024.

Rethinking College: How to Thrive Without a Degree | Karin Klein

Many high school students feel pressured to attend college, even if it may not be the best path for them. Pushing college as the only respectable option does a disservice to students who may thrive by pursuing other options. Karin Klein, author of Rethinking College, shares a list of alternatives to the four year degree, as well as how to share these alternatives with students to help them brainstorm options for a more motivating future.

Watch the presentation, and then click here to secure your copy of Karin’s quiz to help students self-assess whether college is right for them. We also highly recommend you simply purchase a copy of Rethinking College, as every coach, tutor, and teacher should have it on their reference shelf.

  • Karin Klein is an award-winning journalist who has spent most of her career as an editorial writer at the Los Angeles Times, covering education, medicine, science, and environment. She has been awarded numerous fellowships, from the 2006 Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writers to the 2024 fellowship of the Institute for Citizens and Scholars for reporting on career and technical education. She has recently returned to school part-time to study archaeology at Palomar College in San Diego County.

She is a graduate of Wellesley College and attended UC Berkeley journalism school but never took her master's degree because she found her newspaper job first. (Skills before degrees.) Klein is a certified naturalist with OC Parks and the American Cetacean Society, and the author of the interpretive nature guide 50 Hikes in Orange County, now in its second edition. When not writing, reading, cooking new dishes, or practicing piano, she's most likely to be found on hiking trails. She lives in Laguna Beecau, California, with her partner, film editor Rick Shaine;  their two dogs; and Tim the Cat.
