🎧 Rewired Episode 36: Rewiring Learning: Brain Science, Motivation & the Anti-Boring Approach with Gretchen Wegner
I was recently invited to join Tiffany Grimes on Rewired: Neuroscience Meets Real-Life Change — her podcast on neuroscience-based strategies for rewiring habits, expanding possibilities, and creating lasting change — for a conversation about something I care deeply about: how we can make learning more engaging, effective, and, yes, less boring.
In Episode 36, we talked about the intersection of brain science, motivation, executive function, and learning, and what happens when we take a closer look at what the brain actually needs in order to learn, engage, and change.
One of the things I especially enjoyed about this conversation was exploring the difference between simply consuming information and actually creating meaningful change. We can read the book, attend the training, or listen to the podcast — but that doesn't necessarily mean we've learned something in a way that sticks.

Q: How does Gretchen define empowerment? As "I can and I deserve to." She shared that even after returning from a conference among cognitive scientists and teaching experts, where she still didn't quite feel like a peer, she'd started writing the first chapter of a book on the plane home; a small, concrete example of empowerment showing up in real time.
Q: What is the Anti-Boring Learning Lab, and what's the biggest misconception about it? People sometimes assume "Anti-Boring" is about the teacher being entertaining or lively. It's not. It's about helping students access the anti-boring inside themselves, so they have the capacity and responsibility not to bore their own brain, regardless of how engaging their teacher, boss, or coach happens to be.
Q: Where did the name "Anti-Boring" come from? It came out of working with teenagers who'd side-eye any promise that school could be "fun." Telling them school could be "anti-boring" instead, teaching them how not to bore themselves, landed differently; skeptical, but curious enough to listen.
Q: Who is the Anti-Boring Learning Lab actually for? Educators, academic coaches, EF coaches, and tutors who work with learners in a specific capacity, helping them close a gap between what they know and what they need to know, using a blend of teaching and coaching moves rather than straight instruction.
Q: What's the difference between working memory and long-term memory? Long-term memory has essentially unlimited capacity, but everything has to pass through working memory first, a kind of mental whiteboard that holds only about four chunks of information at a time, for just five to ten seconds. That bottleneck is at the root of cognitive overload.
Q: How does emotional state affect learning? When the limbic system is highly activated, it shuts down access to the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for executive function, attention, and action, sometimes called "flipping the lid." Big feelings take up parking spots in working memory, leaving less room to actually learn.
Q: What is the "window of tolerance," and why does it matter for learning? It's the emotional range within which someone can still attend and think clearly, even while having feelings. Outside that window, in hyperarousal or hypoarousal, the brain can't do much thinking at all. Helping students notice where they are in that window, and what tools bring them back, is itself a life skill.
Q: How does boring or repetitive learning shape a student's identity? Kids with ADHD, for instance, tend to receive far more negative feedback than positive from the world around them. Combined with being expected to sit still and follow instructions, that adds up to internalized beliefs like "I'm lazy" or "I'm bad at math," beliefs students then become resistant to challenging, because they've come to depend on them.
Q: Why does understanding cognitive overload help shift those beliefs? When students learn that overload, not laziness or lack of intelligence, is often what's getting in their way, it can be transformative. "Nothing's wrong with me" is a common reaction, replacing a fixed, negative identity with something they can actually work with.
Q: What is the "consent burger," and how does it work? A simple structure for sharing information respectfully: a top bun (checking in on someone's willingness or capacity to receive information, plus genuine empathy for why it matters to them), the teaching or lecture itself in the middle, and a bottom bun (space to reflect on what landed, what didn't, and what they want to do with it). It applies to classrooms, coaching sessions, and team meetings alike.
Q: Why do traditional learning environments so often fail? They inherited a model built for factory work, designed to produce compliance rather than agency; responding to bells, following instructions, and repeating mechanistic tasks. People also tend to teach the way they were taught, which keeps the pattern going even in well-intentioned classrooms.
Q: What's retrieval practice, and why does it matter? It's the practice of testing yourself on what you know, rather than just re-reading or re-hearing it, and it's one of the most effective ways to move information into long-term memory. Something as simple as pausing a podcast to recall what you just heard, or asking a coaching client to restate what mattered from a session, counts.
Q: What are a few simple ways to make any learning environment more "anti-boring"? Build in a moment to check willingness or capacity before teaching something (the top bun), keep the teaching itself contained and clearly marked, and always leave room afterward for genuine reflection; what landed, what didn't, and what the person wants to do with it (the bottom bun).
